Ecopsychology

What exactly is ecopsychology??? Wikipedia defines ecopsychology as the study of “the relationship between human beings and the natural world through ecological and psychological principles.”  To some it may seem simple and obvious that as humans we have an innate connection to wilderness; however, many people will go their entire week experiencing no connection with the natural world. For too many, their only experience in nature is the walk from house to vehicle and the consumption of food products that hopefully came from the earth at some point.

Our society makes it hard for individuals to even be aware of the beauty that  exists in the open air and the sustenance we receive from our land. How does one appreciate the natural world when she feels that her survival comes in a monetary value that is earned through long hours indoors?

Our disconnection with our ecological systems may be the root for many of our physical, mental and social health issues. It is not an illness of the individual, but rather a disorder of our entire western society.  There is plenty of scientific research on this and programs being developed to address it. I encourage individuals to take steps in discovering ways to re-establish your connection with nature. I can help you!

I have recently taken a course in ecopsychology and am on the path to becoming a full fledged Wilderness Rites of Passage and Vision quest guide. I have been working in various positions in the field of outdoor education and adventure therapy for the past 10 years. It is my vision to help people reconnect with the land, their communities, themselves and their inner light!
